Improving Health and Sustainability in the Classrooms

At ErgoFinland, we work every day to create better working and learning environments — whether in offices, healthcare settings, industrial workplaces, or schools.

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of collaborating with Curt Nicolin Gymnasiet in Finspång on a project aimed at improving both student well-being and the school’s sustainability efforts through a new type of classroom chair.

We have been extremely satisfied from start to finish. We carefully evaluated new classroom chairs based on many factors — some of them quite complex — and through a professional and close collaboration with ErgoFinland, we truly found the right solution.

In this project, where we replaced all classroom chairs across the entire school, it was crucial to get it right. Sustainability, student well-being, and a chair that supports long periods of sitting were top priorities. We often work with problem-based learning and larger projects, which means students spend many extended sessions seated.

A More Sustainable Classroom Chair

School environments place high demands on furniture. Chairs are used intensively, every day, and are expected to last for many years. Our goal was therefore to develop a solution that is both long-term sustainable and highly practical.

The result is a classroom chair with a robust frame, designed to withstand daily wear and tear — including the fact that students often lean back and put significant load on their chairs.

Sustainability, however, goes beyond durability. The new chair is designed so that individual components can be replaced if they wear out, rather than replacing the entire chair. This significantly reduces long-term maintenance costs and lowers environmental impact — an important consideration for schools committed to taking greater responsibility for sustainability.

Focusing on Health and Learning

One of the most exciting aspects of this project has been the opportunity to actively support students’ health. The new chair features a lightly active seat that encourages subtle micro-movements while students sit and study. These small movements help stimulate blood circulation, reduce prolonged static sitting, and may contribute to improved concentration and learning performance.

Together with the school, we plan to follow up on these effects through a small pilot project, examining how students experience the change and whether measurable improvements can be seen in well-being or academic outcomes.

At Curt Nicolin Gymnasiet, problem-based learning and larger project work play a central role in education. This places especially high demands on classroom furniture — chairs must remain comfortable during long study sessions while also being durable enough for everyday use.

A Step in the Right Direction

We are proud to be part of Curt Nicolin Gymnasiet’s commitment to creating a more sustainable and health-focused learning environment. This project demonstrates how close collaboration with our customers enables us to develop smart, well-thought-out solutions that make a real difference — both for people and for the environment.
